Muslims stage protests, file police complaints after female BJP leader abuses Prophet Muhammad
Muslims and some opposition party workersstaged protests in different parts of the country against Nupur Sharma, a female leader of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who made derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad. Islamophobic remarks by Sharma also led Muslim activists to file police complaints against her in at least two states—Maharashtra and Telangana. In Maharashtra, the case was registered following a complaint by Raza Academy, a Muslim group. In Telangana, the legal action was initiated by the Muslim political leader Asaduddin Owaisi and his All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.
