A Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police arrested Mahbubul Haque, Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), from his home in Ghoramara, Guwahati, during the night of February 21-22. A case has been registered in Karimganj.
On the evening of February 21, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu posted on X, saying, ‘Shocking allegations have surfaced against USTM’s unethical practices in education.
Students at Central Public School, Patharkandi (owned by the USTM group) were allegedly assured help in the 30-mark MCQ section of their CBSE Class 12 exams. Many students, mostly from Goalpara, were placed there to gain an unfair advantage.
When external invigilators refused to cooperate, chaos broke out. Teachers were locked inside, leading to police intervention.
“This serious violation of academic integrity demands an urgent and thorough investigation,” Assam Education Minister Pegu said.
