Spiritual leader, Assam CM take Jeep ride in Kaziranga at night, FIR lodged

Guwahati: Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev, the country’s much-hyped spiritual leader, entered Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet colleague Jayanta Mallah Baruah, prompting two villagers to lodge a FIR with Bokakhat police station on Sunday.

Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev, the country’s much-hyped spiritual leader, entered Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet colleague Jayanta Mallah Baruah, prompting two villagers to lodge a FIR with Bokakhat police station on Sunday.

Sadguru was seen driving a Jeep Safari inside the National Park with Sarma beside him in a viral video on Saturday night.  Baruah and a few others joined the Sadguru on the jeep safari.  The chief minister and Sadguru opened the National Park to tourists on Saturday (September 24), despite the fact that the scheduled date was October 15.  Various environmental organisations have protested the incident, citing a possible violation of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 by entering the park after 4.30 p.m.

On Sunday, two villagers, Soneswar Narah (Morongial Gaon) and Prabin Pegu (Balijan Adarsha Mising Gaon), filed a FIR with the Bokakhat Police Station against Sadguru, Jaggi Vasudev, chief minister Sarma, and his cabinet colleague Jayanta Malla Baruah, seeking that the police charge them under the law.

“We filed a police report with the Bokakhat Police Station.”  We demand that all members of the delegation be arrested for violating the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The law should be the same for everyone. “Sadguru and the chief minister took the jeep ride at night, despite the fact that it is illegal after 4.30 p.m.,”  Soneswar Narah told reporters after filing the FIR.

“We demand their arrest or a public apology from the entire team,” Narah said.
“The relaxation of the rules for Sadguru and the chief minister will continue to pose a threat to wildlife protection in the National Park.” “The police should do their fundamental duty and arrest them,” Narah added.

“Many of our youth had to give their lives for the cause of the Wildlife Protection Act.” Many people were hurt. Many things must be sacrificed for the sake of the park. Hundreds of bighas of land, wetland and beels, cattle, and other resources were sacrificed to feed the tigers and others. We are not permitted to enter the park to gather firewood or herbs for our tribal festivals. Himanta Biswa’s contribution to the National Park is insignificant in comparison to ours,” he said. “We require justice. “We’re waiting for police intervention,” he added.

“It is unfortunate,” senior journalist and environmental activist Apurba Ballav Goswami said in response to the incident. What happens if a chief minister breaks the rules?”  “An investigation into the entire incident should be initiated.”
“There should be no threat to the environment or wildlife,” Mubina Akhtar, another environmental activist, said.

Sadguru addressed Assam ministers, MLAs, and officials at a Chinton Shivir” programme hosted by the BJP-led government at Borgoss Resort on Saturday.
